It is a beautiful area of the lakes. I'm still to bag The Nab and Angle Tarn Pikes but I might venture elsewhere for a while. You write very well. My wife and I drove across from the Eden Valley (the Cumbrian one, not Kent!) along Ullswater to Glenridding and Hartsop only last weekend. That was mainly a car drive, not a walk, but I was looking up at the mountains and wondering where to go next time. I think you've helped me decide.David Murrayhttp://around-england.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1168232296220618533.post-2523916531825445902012-01-18T19:34:07.366+00:002012-01-18T19:34:07.366+00:00Thanks Aithne - deer are so beautiful and I aspire...Thanks Aithne - deer are so beautiful and I aspire to take an amazing photo of them somewhere in the Lake District at some point! I guess it's true in all popular walking areas but none more so than the Lakes!. We've been followed many times, particularly in thick mist, by people assuming that a) we are going where they want to go and b) wherever that is, there must be a clear path (surely nobody would walk anywhere without an easy path?). Eee dear!.
Walkers have actually followed us down the wrong side of a mountain and we later had to tell them they were in the wrong valley.
The deer are very skittish and incredibly well camouflaged, you can sometimes be looking directly at a whole herd some distance away and not see them until they move.GeoffChttp://v-g.me.uk/blog/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1168232296220618533.post-41704273177005459142012-01-17T21:19:41.226+00:002012-01-17T21:19:41.226+00:00Thanks Jimmy - hope you see some deer if you do!Thanks Jimmy - hope you see some deer if you do!Heelwalker1 - Tanya Oliverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12557800707613880755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1168232296220618533.post-54137319157997727112012-01-17T21:16:33.854+00:002012-01-17T21:16:33.854+00:00Interesting little route.. Etymology was part of my degree for a time and I remember a fantastic map we produced for Lakeland as a department based on field study and research we had made. Such studies can help plot migration and identify areas where things might have been slower to change, such as valley heads where later invaders had to occupy. Not all the Vikings were thugs and displaced the indigenous population as history might want us to believe! I often wonder what happened to that map and whether it's been deposited somewhere in the library or archive at Lancaster. Anyway, the rest of your blog is also excellent. It is such discussion that makes the fabric of such description a whole lot more interesting. I have been raising this very point with many people recently. Too many walk descriptions are poor, "Turn left here, turn right there, go over bridge and get bored here!" WELL DONE AGAIN! P.S. I once swerved to miss deer near Elterwater. The Landy lost traction on ice, bounced off a wall on the offside and consequently caused £2500 of damage! Of course the deer skipped off probably without a thought. My man at the garage? He said, "Dear deer!!"Peter Burgesshttp://www.fellwalkingclub.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1168232296220618533.post-27521818745766618532012-01-17T18:11:25.608+00:002012-01-17T18:11:25.608+00:00Hi Maggie - I will go back early morning to spot t...Hi Maggie - I will go back early morning to spot the deer next time then.
